HSE WAHR, BS EN and Safesmart Height Access Equipment

How We Comply

The UK’s workplace safety regulator, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) develops and implement stringent guidelines in regards to workplace health and safety across all trades, industries and working environments. Their function is to constantly identify existing or new workplace dangers through observation and research, and to enforce any subsequent regulations for preventing injury.

In the UK height access industry, Work at Height Regulations 2005 (WAHR) are implemented and enforced by HSE. All SafeSmart Access products are compliant with this authoritative document.

Working at Height Defined

According to the HSE, “work at height means work in any place where, if there were no precautions in place, a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury. For example, you are working at height if you:

  • are working on a ladder or a flat roof;
  • could fall through a fragile surface;
  • could fall into an opening in a floor or a hole in the ground.”

Criteria and Requirements

WAHR contains several requirements for compliance, which basically fit into two categories: product features and user training.

SafeSmart Access accommodate these requirements through the development of height access systems which consider construction quality, materials quality, fall arrest considerations, stability in design, and durability, in regards to resistance to all common elemental factors, such as moisture, sunlight, wind and drastically-fluctuating temperatures.

For compliant onsite use, SafeSmart Access offer consultation and training for the use of each one of its products. To quote WAHR regulations as of 2005 onwards, this helps with organisation and planning:

“4. (1) Every employer shall ensure that work height is –

(a) properly planned;

(b) appropriately supervised; and

(c) carried out in a manner which is so far as is reasonably practicable safe, and that its planning includes the selection of work equipment in accordance with regulation 7.”

BS EN

SafeSmart Access products also comply with applicable BS EN regulations, as enforced by BSI Group.
