Identifying the Challenge
One particular challenge faced on the HS2 project involved providing safe and rapid access to the slurry pipes used by the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for maintenance and checks.
Maintaining the slurry pipes from the TBM at the Bromford East shaft was crucial to the success of this phase of HS2. However, without proper access to these pipes, workers were left exposed to potential hazards during maintenance and inspections, both slowing down progress and increasing risk on site.
Recognising the need for a safe and effective solution, the project team sought SafeSmart’s expertise to bridge the gap – literally.
Supplying the Solution: AdaptaSpan Modular Bridging System
SafeSmart responded with our innovative AdaptaSpan system, a modular bridging solution designed to span large areas with minimal on-site engineering. The system, made up of 3-metre modules, was used to create pedestrian bridges up to 9-metres long without needing time-consuming custom designs or temporary works. The AdaptaSpan System could be easily bolted together using standard fixings, also speeding up the installation process.
By providing safe, elevated access along the slurry pipes, workers could now conduct essential maintenance and checks without the previous risk or delays.
