From Makeshift to Mobile: How SafeSmart Stepovers Transformed Access for FC Civils

The Challenge As part of HS2’s flagship Thame Valley Viaduct, FC Civils faced a unique access challenge. The construction of the viaduct required operatives — including steel fixers, carpenters, and other key personnel — to work on both sides of a robust kerb stretching over 880 metres. With the kerb positioned just one metre from the edge of the viaduct (standing more than 15 metres high), workers needed multiple access points along the entire span, and the solution had to be lightweight, mobile, and simple enough for one person to reposition by hand. Site visits and early scoping confirmed that FC Civils needed a system that balanced safety, mobility, and durability — without the risks of the make-shift wooden stepover. The Solution After assessing the requirements, the answer was clear: a Mobile Stepover Access system designed specifically for this project. The solution incorporated: SmartClamp technology – easily clamped onto rebar on the kerb before pouring, or directly onto the finished kerb once poured. Lightweight aluminium construction – strong, durable, yet easy to move without specialist equipment. Guardrail protection & clamping system – ensuring a secure, stable fit and complete compliance with safety standards. Height-adjustable castors – giving FC Civils flexibility for future applications and varying deck pour heights. Unlike scaffolding, SafeSmart Stepovers require no external contractors, no ongoing inspections, and no specialist training. This provided a long-term, self-sufficient solution that could be relocated quickly and safely wherever access was needed. Execution Installation was straightforward, with the Stepovers securely clamped in place during construction phases. Their modular, lightweight design allowed quick deployment and repositioning along the 880-metre stretch of kerb, without delays or downtime.                   BEFORE                      AFTER The Results The introduction of SafeSmart’s

How Severfield Used StepOvers to Simplify Site Movement

The project is a dynamic mixed-use hub, introducing 165 new residential units above the existing roofline while integrating retail and employment spaces on the lower levels. Alongside these structural additions, the development will enhance the public realm, improve accessibility, and strengthen community connections within the Bermondsey area. With such a complex, multi-level design, ensuring safe and efficient access at every stage became a critical challenge. When it comes to complex steel-frame structures, maintaining mobility across beams often poses significant on-site difficulties. This was precisely the case, where restricted space and a low, 5-foot working height rendered traditional access solutions unworkable. At first, the team attempted to navigate around the beams, but it quickly became clear that this approach wouldn’t be practical. They needed something smarter — a faster, safer, and more adaptable alternative. That’s where our modular stepovers made all the difference. The Challenge Traditionally, scaffold setups were used to access elevated steelwork. However, assembling scaffolding on site is time-consuming, requires significant space, and demands regular inspections and sign-offs. On this project, early design choices had already consumed more room than expected, leaving the team with little flexibility. With the site in constant progress , it became clear that a more adaptable and efficient solution was needed. The Solution : Modular Stepover with Wheel Adaptation Working with Severfield, one of the UK’s leading structural steel specialists, the team introduced Stepovers’ to streamline access across the steel frame. These lightweight, modular units are designed for quick installation and effortless movement across beams. The idea was simple yet effective: the team could lift the Stepover on one side and use fitted wheels to slide it smoothly across the beams. This eliminated the need to dismantle and rebuild traditional scaffolds every time work progressed along the structure.  *Our system complies with BS EN

Upgrading Site Access at Atlas Road – From Scaffolding to AdaptaSpan

At SafeSmart Access UK, we partner with forward-thinking construction teams to deliver safer, more efficient access solutions. Our recent project with long-standing client SCS JV at their Atlas Road site is a strong example of how replacing traditional scaffolding with a proprietary system can drive significant time and cost savings — without compromising on safety. The Challenge : Ongoing Costs, Inefficiencies, and Safety Risks SCS had been using a scaffold-based bridge on site. While effective at the outset, the system had become increasingly inefficient and costly to maintain: Weekly inspections were required for compliance Design changes or adjustments required booking external contractors, leading to delays The site layout forced teams to navigate around the existing bridge, adding to walk times It was estimated that over a total of 3 man-hours per day had been spent walking around the scaffold bridge It became clear that a better way was needed — a more permanent, streamlined solution that would enhance safety, reduce maintenance time, and improve overall site access efficiency. The Solution : A Fully Integrated SafeSmart System Following a site visit on 7th March, our team worked closely with SCS to understand their operational needs and site constraints. By 24th March, we had designed and quoted a off the shelf solution to replace the scaffold bridge entirely. The SafeSmart solution included: AdaptaSpan – providing a stretcher compliant, direct route over a 15m Span. AdjustaStairs – offering quick and safe access on and off the bridge Double Height Guardrails – for added fall protection, particularly critical high risk areas This proprietary system removed the need for ongoing scaffold inspections, reduced site traffic congestion, and greatly improved worker safety when crossing the area. The Outcome: Time Savings, Safety Gains, and Long-Term Value The new access system delivered immediate and measurable improvements: ✅ Inspection-Free
